The ride of LEARNING and great views

Sunday 22 Aug marked the start of the106km Flight Centre Epic. The race took off from Preston Peak wines and the “hills” started very soon after. I (Bushy), was very glad I was in the third wave to leave, as Toowoomba had turned on one of it’s finest COLD days and the extra hour of sunshine was appreciated!

The ride to the first of three checkpoints in the Ma Ma creek region was challenging, picturesque and mostly single track. I also had my first lesson of the day – Don’t put Endura in your Camal Bak as it clogs the hose and puts you out of the lead group straight away . . .

After the second checkpoint I climbed the biggest and steepest hill I have ever completed. There are also some long road sections through this area of the race but when I turned into the hills again I had my second lesson of the day – Don’t let your chain come off the top of your rear cassette. This cost me 25 minutes in the race.

After stacking the bike 5km from home I crossed the finish line in 5 hrs 17 seconds (including the mechanical and Camal Bak stop). I placed sixth in the open category which I will improve on next year, courtesy of my lessons this year!

I recommend the Epic to everyone – If you don’t want to race there is some great riding to be had a more leisurely pace . . .

Cheers - Bushy
